RBT Supervision Requirements

Describe BACB Supervision Standards for RBTs

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has established supervision standards for Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) to ensure that they receive appropriate supervision and guidance from qualified professionals. These standards include the following:

  1. Qualified Supervisor: RBTs must receive supervision from a qualified supervisor who holds a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) certification.

  2. Frequency and Duration: RBTs must receive at least 5% of the total hours spent providing behavior-analytic services per month in supervision.

  3. Content: Supervision must cover a range of topics related to the RBT's responsibilities and job performance, including behavior-analytic skills, ethical conduct, and professional development.

  4. Structure of supervision: Supervision must include at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts per month (i.e., not over the phone or via email). Your supervisor must observe you providing services in at least one of the monthly meetings. In-person, on-site observation is preferred. However, these may be conducted via web cameras, video-conferencing, or similar means instead of your supervisor being physically present.

At least one of the two supervision sessions must be individual but the other may occur in a small-group meeting. Small-group meetings are interactive meetings in which two two to 10 RBTs who share similar experiences participate. The number of RBTs may not exceed 10, regardless of the number of supervisors present. If non-RBTs are present during the meeting, their participation should be limited to increase the interaction of RBTs.

  5. Competence: The supervisor must be competent in the areas of behavior analysis relevant to the services provided by the RBT, and must provide feedback and guidance to help the RBT develop and maintain their skills.

  6. Documentation: The supervisor must maintain accurate documentation of the supervision sessions, including the date, duration, and content of each session for 7 years.

  7. Evaluation: The supervisor must evaluate the RBT's job performance and provide feedback to help the RBT improve their skills and address any areas of concern.

By following these supervision standards, the BACB aims to ensure that RBTs receive appropriate supervision and guidance to provide effective and ethical behavior-analytic services to their clients.
